From Fox News: The Laken Riley Act passed the House of Representatives on Tuesday afternoon, the first piece of federal legislation approved by the 119th Congress after the House agreed to its rules for the term.

All voting Republicans supported the bill, along with 48 Democrats – more than the total left-wing lawmakers who voted for it last year. It passed on a 264 to 159 margin and will now be sent to the Senate.

The bill is named after a nursing student who was killed by an illegal immigrant while jogging on the University of Georgia’s campus.

The bill would require federal immigration authorities to detain illegal immigrants found guilty of theft-related crimes. It also would allow states to sue the Department of Homeland Security for harm caused to their citizens because of illegal immigration.

The bill was first introduced last year by Rep. Mike Collins (R-Ga.).

After the bill passed the House Tuesday, Collins wrote, “I’m thankful that the House passed the Laken Riley Act in an overwhelmingly bipartisan manner. No family should have to go through what Laken’s has endured. It’s now up to the Senate to work together to put this crucial legislation on President Trump’s desk.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) wrote, “Today, I voted for the Laken Riley Act to prevent the horrific and brutal murder of additional innocent Americans at the hands of illegal alien thugs.

“My heart still breaks for Laken, her family, and everyone touched by her life. I’m proud this was the very first bill we passed in the 119th Congress.”
