From The Hill: Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), a key vote on the Senate Judiciary Committee, says he will not support Ed Martin’s nomination to serve as U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, citing his concerns over Martin’s advocacy for people who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Tillis’s opposition is a serious blow, as Martin needs the support of a majority of the Senate Judiciary Committee to advance to the Senate floor, and other Republicans on the panel have yet to announce their positions.
“If Mr. Martin were being put forth as a U.S. attorney for any district except the district where Jan. 6 happened, the protest happened, I’d probably support him. But not in this district,” Tillis told reporters Tuesday.
“At this point, I’ve indicated to the White House I wouldn’t support his nomination,” Tillis said.
Tillis announced his decision even after Martin met with him Monday afternoon.
The report explains that those opposing Martin have slammed him “for helping to organize the “Stop the Steal” movement after the 2020 presidential election and serving as defense counsel in Jan. 6-related cases.”
Since President Trump appointed Martin as interim U.S. attorney, Martin has dropped cases against Jan. 6 protesters and fired career prosecutors in the office.
Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) finally confirmed Tuesday morning that he will vote to confirm Martin, out of deference to President Trump, if Martin ever gets out of committee.
If Tillis votes “no” in the committee, Martin’s nomination will be blocked with an 11-11 tie.
At this point, it appears the only way Martin can now get through the committee is if Tillis only votes “present” instead of “no”.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) said Tuesday, “I think that would suggest that he’s probably not going to get out of committee.”
Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk posted a video of Tillis announcing he will not support Martin. Kirk wrote:
BREAKING: Sen. Tom Tillis informs the White House he is opposing President Trump’s pick for U.S. Attorney for D.C. Ed Martin.
“Most of my concerns related to January 6th.”
“I’ve indicated to the White House I wouldn’t support his nomination.”
Tillis’ logic is absurd. He ignores or forgets that many J6ers who entered the Capitol were waved in by Capitol Police. Many simply looked inside the building or took a selfie and left. Those people did NOT deserve to spend a day in prison.
Tillis is handing this critical post to the Democrats. If Ed Martin is not confirmed by Senate Republicans before May 20th, Trump-hating Judge Boasberg gets to choose his replacement.
Tillis tried to smooth it over by saying Martin “seems like a really nice person” but he still won’t support him.
