Texas teenager Karmelo Anthony, 17, has been indicted for first-degree murder in the April 2 stabbing of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf. The incident occurred during a dispute over a seat at a high school track meet in District 11-5A.
“For weeks, my team has been presenting evidence to the grand jury. Today, I summarized that evidence, and I asked the Grand Jury to return a first-degree murder indictment against Karmelo Anthony and — which they did,” Collin County District Attorney Greg Willis said in a press conference.
The case sparked outrage after Anthony was released on a $250,000 bond and returned to a $900,000 home in Frisco’s gated Richwoods community, where rent is about $3,500 a month. A neighbor said he even bought a new car. This came after he persuaded a judge to lower his bond from $1 million, claiming financial hardship.
Anthony claimed he acted in self-defense, a stance echoed by his family on a GiveSendGo fundraiser that has raised over $530,000. After the indictment, his attorney, Mike Howard, released a video reaffirming the self-defense claim.
“We are confident that when all the facts are presented and the full story is heard,” he said, “the jury will reach the right conclusion and justice will be done.”
The DA’s office said Anthony faces a possible life sentence if convicted.
