Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, announced Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz as her running mate for the 2024 election on Tuesday.

This decision, reported by the Associated Press, positions Walz against former President Trump and his campaign’s efforts to flip Minnesota, a state Democrats have consistently won in past presidential elections.

Walz, 60, a former congressman now serving his second term as Minnesota’s governor, was a prominent contender for the role. His addition to the ticket is expected to bolster Harris’s support in Minnesota and the neighboring battleground states of Wisconsin and Michigan.

As chair of the Democratic Governors Association, Walz has also demonstrated significant fundraising prowess, which could benefit Harris’s campaign. He is known for his ultra-progressive policies such as transgender agendas, pro-choice abortion support, and pro-migrant initiatives. He recently changed the state flag of Minnesota to resemble components of the Somali regional flags due to the state’s immense Somali population.

Walz was also governor during the George Floyd riots that desecrated cities in the state.

Raised in rural Nebraska, Walz enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1981 and later attended Chadron State College, where he graduated in 1989 with a degree in social science education.
