The illegal alien from Honduras who killed Sarah Root, a 21-year-old woman from Iowa in 2016, is finally back in the United States to face the consequences, after 9 years on the run.

Eswin Mejia was driving while drunk and street racing in Omaha, Nebraska on January 31, 2016, when he rear-ended Root’s car while she was stopped at a stop light. His blood alcohol content was three times the legal limit.  Sarah died later at a hospital. She had just graduated from college hours earlier… with a bachelor degree in criminal investigation.

Mejia, who was 19 years old at the time, was jailed and charged, but a loophole in the state law allowed him to be released after paying only $5,000 of his $50,000 bond.

Fox News explained, after his January 2016 arrest for motor vehicle homicide, ICE officials “encountered Mr. Mejia just once,” but they did not file a detainer.

Mejia then fled the country, and was later added to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) “Most Wanted” list.

How he arrived in the United States to start with: Border agents first encountered Mejia in May 2013 when he arrived in Nogales, Ariz., and was designated as an unaccompanied child, according to an ICE response letter to Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb, at the time. “As required by law,” Mejia was transferred to the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which then shipped him to Omaha in 2014 to live with his brother.

Less than three years after crossing the border illegally, the “unaccompanied child” killed an American citizen.

After fleeing the United States and evading authorities for 9 years, Mejia was finally arrested in Honduras in late February.

The Honduras Police announced on February 27, “The Honduran National Police captures Eswin Mejía in Santa Bárbara. He has been a fugitive since 2016 and is wanted by the US for the murder of an American citizen. We remain firm against impunity and transnational crime.”

On Friday, the Honduras Police posted an update, along with photos of Mejia being marched to a plane by authorities, and announced he is being sent back to the United States to face justice.

“EDWIN GABRIEL MEJIA EXTRADITATED! Under strong security measures he was moved from Tamara National Penitentiary to Soto Cano Air Base to be handed over to the United States authorities. Black Mamba Sandcat armored vehicles were used in the transfer of the extradited,” the announcement reads.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on X, “Justice will finally be served for Sarah Root. Nine years ago, Sarah was tragically killed by an illegal immigrant who later fled our county.

“Today, the Trump Administration is announcing the extradition of Sarah’s killer from Honduras to the United States to face justice once and for all. Thank you to the Honduran government for their cooperation and assistance.”

Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) added “The Trump administration never forgot Sarah Root’s story. Together, we fought for justice to hold the illegal immigrant who took her life accountable. Iowans and every American know that this administration will always put our citizens first.”

Sen. Ernst added, “Thanks to @realDonaldTrump and his entire administration, Sarah Root’s killer is being extradited to the United States and will FINALLY face consequences for taking the life of a young Iowan. Justice will finally be delivered for the Root family!”

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem then announced:

The extradition and arrest of this criminal alien is the culmination of a decades-long battle for justice for Sarah Root and her family.

Thanks to the hard work of our Homeland Security Investigation and our interagency law enforcement partners, Eswin Mejia, who fled the US to evade prosecution, will finally face justice for the killing of Sarah Root. Sarah should still be here today and this illegal alien should have never been in our country in the first place.

Senator Joni Ernst has been a champion for Sarah and her family, and her efforts and leadership were crucial in Mejia’s extradition.

President Trump is putting the safety of Americans first—no longer will murderers and criminal illegal aliens be released into American communities.

Attorney General Pam Bondi released the following statement: “Hard work by our DOJ Office of International Affairs and @USMarshalsHQ, in partnership with ICE and HSI, led to today’s extradition of Eswin Mejia into U.S. custody. Mejia will now face justice for the 2016 tragic death of 21-year-old Sarah Root who was killed from vehicular homicide. He should have never been in the United States—but will answer for his crime.”

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) wrote, “Thx Pres Trump/Scty Rubio/AG Bondi 4 securing the extradition of the Honduran national responsible for Iowan Sarah Root’s death Sarah’s killer will now have to face the American justice system & be held responsible for this awful crime.”

Secretary of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce declared, “Justice and accountability under the Trump administration prevailed as the culprit of Sarah Root’s death has been extradited from Honduras to the United States so he can face justice once and for all.”

Below is a 2018 video as Sarah’s other, Michelle Root, paid an emotional tribute to her daughter.

KETV.com explained: The case caught national attention after Sarah’s mother, Michelle, fought to get a law passed that would require police to detain any undocumented immigrant who commits a crime resulting in death or serious injury.

After years of trying to get the bill passed in both chambers of Congress, “Sarah’s Law” was signed by Speaker Mike Johnson and made its way to President Donald Trump’s desk.

Rep. Randy Reenstra (R-Iowa) wrote, “I thank President Trump and Secretary Rubio for extraditing the illegal immigrant who killed Sarah Root nearly a decade ago back to the United States. This is a day the Root family has long waited for, and now, this vicious criminal will face the consequences of his actions.”

Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks (R-Iowa) wrote, “After nearly a decade, justice is finally being served for Sarah Root’s family. Thank you @POTUS and the entire Administration for extraditing the criminal who took Sarah’s life. We will never forget her and will fight relentlessly to protect our borders.”
