From the Wall Street Journal: Greenlanders voted to rebuff President Trump’s bid to control their icebound, mineral-rich island and to restore calm after a tumultuous few weeks dominated by the U.S. leader’s covetous comments.
Voters on the island, population 57,000, gave first place to Demokraatit, a center-right pro-business party that has never held power but is strongly opposed to an American takeover of the self-governing territory.
Yet, in a sign that many on Greenland also want to wrest more power from Denmark, which controls the Arctic island, voters handed second position to a party set on independence in the next three years and whose leader has called for a bilateral security agreement with the U.S.
Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the head of Demokraatit, or the Democrats, which won nearly 30% of the vote, must now form a coalition in the 31-member Greenlandic Parliament.
The ballot, the most high-profile in Greenland’s recent history, caught voters between long-held desires for independence from Denmark and a deep concern for the consequences of Trump’s statements about owning Greenland outright.
In a significant rise, the Demokraatit Party won nearly 30% of the vote, compared to only 9% in 2021.
Prime Minister Múte Bourup Egede acknowledged his party’s loss in a Facebook post:
“Thank you to everyone who showed up for the election 🇬🇱 Special thanks to all of you who voted for me personally ❤️ We respect the outcome of the election. Now the work begins in the new election period. And we’re excited to hear what the parties will offer for the negotiations – We’re ready 💪✊.”
In a Truth Social post Sunday evening, President Donald Trump wrote, “As I made clear during my Joint Address to Congress, the United States strongly supports the people of Greenland’s right to determine their own future. We will continue to KEEP YOU SAFE, as we have since World War II. We are ready to INVEST BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to create new jobs and MAKE YOU RICH — And, if you so choose, we welcome you to be a part of the Greatest Nation anywhere in the World, the United States of America!”
Below is Trump’s message to Greenland, which he included in his address to Congress last week.
