Republican Rep. Chip Roy of Texas announced Thursday that he is running for the office of Texas state Attorney General.
The position currently held by Republican Ken Paxton, who is running in a GOP primary battle for U.S. Senate, as he seeks to oust current GOP Sen. John Cornyn.
Roy, 53, has served in the U.S. Congress since January 2019. He previously served as chief of staff to Sen. Ted Cruz and as first assistant attorney general of Texas.
The Texas Tribune explained:
Roy’s candidacy shakes up an already crowded field that includes state Sens. Joan Huffman of Houston and Mayes Middleton of Galveston, and Aaron Reitz, a former senior aide to Paxton and at the Department of Justice. Roy enters the race with more than $2.5 million in his federal campaign account and a likely headstart on name recognition, stemming from his frequent appearances in the national spotlight.
This now opens up yet another U.S. Congress seat that Republicans will be scrambling to keep and Democrats will be seeking to seize.

“Texas has a long and proud tradition of rising to defend our homes, our freedom, and our communities. I’m running for Attorney General to carry on that legacy… unafraid to fight, unafraid to win, and unafraid to defend Texas at every turn,” Roy wrote, announcing his new campaign.
“No more Soros-funded judges and [district attorneys] putting criminals on our streets. No more judge-made mandates that Texas pay for illegals in our public schools. No more communities built on Sharia law,” Roy vowed, highlighting actions he will take if elected at Attorney General.

In a post on X Thursday afternoon, Roy wrote, “I promised my constituents 6 years ago I wouldn’t stay in Washington for 20+ years… and I represent the best district in Texas, but representatives are not supposed to be permanent (or used for financial gain – ban stock trading).”
