Republican Rep. Mark Green of Tennessee, who has served as the House Homeland Security Committee Chairman, announced in a statement on X Thursday afternoon that he has just placed his final vote in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Green, 60, had announced on June 9 that he intended to resign after the House voted on the massive reconciliation package.
Rep. Green first served in the Tennessee state senate from January 2013 to December 2018. He was then elected to U.S. Congress, where he has served since January 2019.
“Though I planned to retire at the end of the previous Congress, I stayed to ensure that President Trump’s border security measures and priorities make it through Congress,” Green said on June 9. “By overseeing the border security portion of the reconciliation package, I have done that. After that, I will retire, and there will be a special election to replace me.”
“I have now served the public for nearly four decades,” he continued. “The Army took me to Iraq and Afghanistan. The people sent me to the Tennessee legislature and the halls of Congress. Along the way, I have often remarked on the strength of the men and women I have served with. I know that the integrity, decency and faith of the American people are what powered us for the first 250 years, and will power us for another 250 and beyond.”
After voting in favor of the Big Beautiful Bill legislation Thursday, Green announced in a new post on X, “Today was my last vote in Congress. My time here started with a fire to serve veterans, it continued with leading the historic impeachment of a cabinet secretary, and now it ends with achieving real border security. I am grateful my last vote was for the one Big Beautiful Bill.”

Tennessee State Rep. Jody Barrett has indicated he may run for Green’s seat, and several conservatives are encouraging him to do so.
“A special election is coming soon to replace @RepMarkGreen as he has announced plans to resign from Congress upon passage of the BBB. The left thinks they can take this seat. The establishment thinks they can control it. But YOU will have the final say. #keepTN7red,” Barrett declared.
