BREAKING: Georgia’s top court discards Fani Willis’s final bid to prosecute Trump

From The Hill: The Georgia Supreme Court ended Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’s (D) bid to remain atop her election interference criminal prosecution against President Trump and his allies Tuesday.

The 4-3 decision declines to review a lower ruling disqualifying Willis over a “significant appearance of impropriety” stemming from her romantic relationship with a top prosecutor on the case.

It’s a death knell for the prosecution against Trump and his allies in Georgia over their efforts to subvert the state’s 2020 election results — at least under Willis’s office.

Though Georgia’s Prosecuting Attorneys’ Council could appoint a new prosecutor to take on the case, that process could take months, leaving the sprawling racketeering prosecution in limbo.

The report explains that out of court’s nine justices, two did not vote on the case. Justice Benjamin Land was disqualified and Chief Justice Nels Peterson did not participate.

Ashleigh Merchant, who served as defense attorney for Trump co-defendant Michael Roman and exposed Willis’ romantic relationship with Wade, said: “We hope this will finally close this chapter.”

Steve Sadow, Trump’s attorney in the case, said in a statement, “Willis’ misconduct during the investigation and prosecution of President Trump was egregious and she deserved nothing less than disqualification.”

Jeffrey Clark, Acting Administrator of the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs at the Office of Management and Budget, wrote, “I’m pleased to announce that Fani Willis has now been permanently disqualified from prosecuting the indictment that she brought against President Trump, me, and many others. The Georgia Supreme Court denied cert to Fani Willis, who was attempting to get that Court to take her case, so that she could try to get un-disqualified after the Georgia Court of Appeals threw her off the case.

“The case now moves to the Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia. They will decide on a replacement for Willis. Praise the Lord for progress in this case. It never should have been brought in the first place.”
