BREAKING: Former youngest congressman aims to make political comeback, announces new run for Congress

From Fox News: Former North Carolina Republican Congressman Madison Cawthorn announced he will be running for Florida’s 19th congressional seat on Wednesday during a phone call with Fox News Digital.

Cawthorn pointed to the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk as a core reason behind him returning to the political scene, though the 30-year-old former congressman said he had been “juggling” the idea of running for congress since Florida’s 19th District Representative Byron Donalds announced he would be vacating the seat to run for governor.

“After Charlie Kirk’s assassination, I knew that there was really no option. I’ve decided to run for Congress again,” Cawthorn told Fox News Digital. “I want to make sure [the people of Florida] have amazing representation in Washington, D.C., because I know exactly what happens in the swamp.”

Cawthorn, 30, originally from North Carolina, became the youngest person ever elected to U.S. Congress since 1964, when he won a seat to represent North Carolina’s 11th congressional district in 2021. He only served one term, and was defeated in his 2023 re-election effort after he was hit with multiple scandals.

Cawthorn has since moved to Cape Coral, Florida, and is now running for the seat Byron Donalds will be vacating.

Cawthorn just posted a video on X Wednesday morning, announcing the launch of his campaign.

“I’ve never backed down from a fight, and I won’t start now. I’ll stand with President Trump, crush the woke Left, deport illegals, and help fix Florida’s broken insurance system,” Cawthorn wrote.

Conservative filmmaker and commentator Robby Starbuck wrote, “I fully and wholeheartedly endorse my friend Madison Cawthorn. I will be maxing out to his campaign and I hope you’ll support him too. 🇺🇸.”

Cawthorn thanked him for the endorsement.

Cawthorn was badly injured in a car crash in 2014, when he was 18 years old. He was riding as a passenger in the car, when his friend fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a concrete barrier. Cawthorn was left paralyzed from the waist down as a result of the crash.

In addition to the previous scandals, the Washington Examiner wrote:

Cawthorn filed to run for Congress nearly a month after he was arrested after failing to appear in court for an outstanding traffic violation related to his suspended driver’s license. He was released within an hour on a $2,000 bond after being taken into custody on Sept. 10.

The Washington Examiner also shared details of the prior controversies:

During his single term, Cawthorn was mired in various controversies within weeks of one another. In March 2022, he said he was invited to an orgy by members of Congress and alleged some lawmakers were snorting cocaine. He later admitted the allegations were untrue and “exaggerated.”

Cawthorn pleaded guilty to possessing a dangerous weapon at Charlotte Douglas International Airport after a handgun was found in his carry-on bag in April 2022. Most of the other charges were related to various traffic violations.

In May that year, Cawthorn received further backlash when a video showed him naked in bed with another person. He called the video “blackmail” and said he was merely “being crass with a friend.”
