Former Vice President Dick Cheney has died.

“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025,” his family said in a statement.

The statement continued:

“He was 84 years old. His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed. The former Vice President died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.

“For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming’s Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States.

“Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing. We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”

ABC News said Cheney was “considered by many political observers to be the most politically active and influential vice president in U.S. history.”

From ABC:

He served as the youngest White House chief of staff under President Gerald Ford; represented Wyoming in the U.S. House of Representatives — where he worked with congressional leadership and President Ronald Reagan; was secretary of defense under President George H.W. Bush; and later served two terms as vice president under Bush’s son, President George W. Bush.

Cheney, one of the most controversial men ever to be vice president, was a powerful politician who was an important figure in key moments in the White House, including being in charge in D.C. when the terrorists attacked on 9/11.

At the time, then-President Bush was out of town visiting the Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida.

Cheney had gathered the senior staff to watch as the situation unfolded, as Bush made his way back to Washington. Cheney was also a “driving force behind America’s ‘war on terror,’ including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and also known for his penchant for secrecy,” Fox News noted.

“A hero to hawkish conservatives, he was a villain to liberals and Democrats. Hillary Clinton once compared him to Darth Vader,” Fox reported.

“His power is unparalleled in the history of the republic, frankly, for that position,” John Hulsman, a research fellow at The Heritage Foundation, a conservative Washington-based think tank, told ABC’s “Nightline” in 2005.

Fox News also noted that Cheney had “a long history of cardiac problems, including five heart attacks” and that he “received a heart transplant on March 24, 2012, at a Virginia hospital after nearly 21 months on a waiting list.”

Reactions on X appear to be focused on Cheney’s controversial nature. Many posts revolve around decisions he is believed, or known, to be behind.

His daughter, another controversial political figure, is a former U.S. representative for Wyoming who was disliked by many conservatives due to her involvement in the probe into the Jan. 6, 2021, incident at the Capitol, among other things. She has not posted to the platform.

President Donald J. Trump has not reacted to the news on his social media platform, Truth Social, as of the publishing of this article.

In this interview from July 25, 2001, Cheney discusses being vice president, including working with George W. Bush, as well as health issues.
