From the New York Post: Ex-Gov. Andrew Cuomo has finally announced his bid for City Hall — a late entry that threatens to eclipse a crowded Democratic primary and deal a diminished incumbent Mayor Eric Adams a political death blow.
Cuomo enters the race already widely considered the front runner after a months-long shadow campaign, in which he coyly avoided officially announcing his comeback while ruthlessly capitalizing behind-the-scenes on Adams’ scandal-plagued first term.
The backroom maneuvering by Cuomo quietly amassed a formidable amount of support and siphoned off many of Adams’ prominent backers, even before the three-term governor jumped into the race.
Cuomo announced his campaign launch in a 17-minute video posted to social media at noon Saturday.
“We know that today our New York City is in trouble,” Cuomo says in the video. “The city just feel threatening, out of control. These conditions exist not as an act of God, but rather as an act of our political leaders. Or more precisely, the lack of intelligent action by many of our political leaders.”
While not referring to Mayor Adams by name, Cuomo says in his announcement, “I know we can turn the city around and I believe I can help and that is why I announced my candidacy today for mayor of New York City.”
Cuomo previously served as governor of New York from 2011 to 2021, when he resigned in disgrace after being hit with sexual harassment allegations by multiple women.
In addition to that scandal, Cuomo was heavily criticized for his handling of nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pix11 pointed out that Cuomo joins an already crowded pool of candidates for the June 24 Democrat primary, including Adams, City Comptroller Brad Lander, State Senators Zellnor Myrie and Jessica Ramos, former Comptroller Scott Stringer, State Assemblymembers Zohran Mamdani and Michael Blake and hedge fund manager Whitney Tilson.
Below is Cuomo’s just-released video announcement:
Democrat opponent Brad Lander has already released a campaign ad reminding voters of Cuomo’s past scandals:
Welcome, @andrewcuomo !
In honor of your sad attempt to get attention, let’s remember your time as Governor of New York—before you resigned for sexually harassing 13 women and leading thousands of elderly New Yorkers to their deaths during Covid-19.https://t.co/JhXFMphn17 pic.twitter.com/zafkiIqD8x

Another Democrat NYC mayor candidate, Zohran Kwame Mamdani, also released an ad hitting back at Cuomo:
Andrew Cuomo is running for Eric Adams’ second term: the same donors, the same agenda, the same chaos.
But I believe New Yorkers are hungry for a different kind of politics—one that puts working people first. pic.twitter.com/vx7x83yVos
