From the New York Times: Keisha Lance Bottoms, a former mayor of Atlanta, entered the race for governor of Georgia on Tuesday, becoming the highest-profile Democrat in an election that will test the durability of Georgia’s relatively new status as a swing state.

Ms. Bottoms has immediately set her sights on President Trump, who won Georgia in 2024 but has had a strained history with the state, including with Gov. Brian Kemp and some of the state’s other top Republicans. Ms. Bottoms said she was positioning herself as an antidote to the “chaos in Washington,” citing her time leading Atlanta during Mr. Trump’s first term as useful experience.

Bottoms, 55, a former prosecutor, was elected mayor of Atlanta in 2017, and served one term, from January 2018 until January 2022. In June 2022, Bottoms joined the Biden administration as senior advisor and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement. She didn’t even last a year in that role, leaving in February 2023.

If elected, Bottoms could become the first Black female governor in the nation. (Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears is also running for governor of Virginia.)

Bottoms announced her campaign for governor in a video released early Tuesday, and used it to attack President Trump, claiming he is a disaster for the country.

Posting the video, she wrote, “I was raised to stand up to bullies and to fight for what is right. We deserve better than what Donald Trump and Republicans are giving us. I’ll never be afraid to battle for the people of Georgia.”

Bottoms’ announcement is being met with ridicule and mockery from conservatives on social media.  Below is just a sampling of the comments pouring in:
