From the Washington Times: FBI Director Christopher A. Wray plans to resign on or before Inauguration Day, The Washington Times has learned.
Mr. Wray is calling it quits because he doesn’t want to get fired by President-elect Donald Trump, according to sources inside the bureau who are familiar with the director’s thinking.
“He’s going to be gone at the inauguration. On or before the inauguration,” a source said.
Following Mr. Wray’s departure, Deputy Director Paul Abbate will become acting director and appoint an acting deputy director. Mr. Abbate’s original plan was to stay until May or June so he could help with the transition to a new FBI director.
Wray, 57, was initially appointed as FBI Director by Trump and assumed office in August 2017, after Trump had fired former director James Comey.
However, Trump, and many other Republicans, have since come to distrust Wray over the way he has ‘weaponized’ the department against Trump and other conservatives. The FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago was the last straw for Trump.
Trump has nominated Kash Patel, the former defense secretary’s chief of staff and senior adviser to the National Security Council, as the new FBI Director.
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) fired off a scorching 11-page letter to Wray on Monday, saying he has “no confidence” in his leadership, and demanded he step down.
“For the good of the country, it’s time for you and your deputy to move on to the next chapter in your lives. I’ve spent my career fighting for transparency, and I’ve always called out those in government who have fought against it,” Grassley wrote in the letter to Wray, referring also to the FBI’s deputy director Paul Abbate. “For the public record, I must do so once again now.”
“Your and Deputy Director Abbate’s failure to take control of the FBI has hindered my work and others’ work throughout multiple Congresses on matters that needed timely information, and has prevented the truth on some issues from ever reaching the American people. You’ve also shown a continuing double standard and failure to carry through on promises,” Grassley wrote in the fiery letter.
Since Grassley has called out Abbate as well, the Washington Times notes a different leader may be temporarily appointed until Patel is confirmed.

“In his 7yrs as FBI Dir Chris Wray has allowed the bureau 2b politicized + repeatedly refused 2 answer to Congress & protect whistleblowers. Time 2 turn the page on Dir Wray & Deputy Dir Abbate’s failed leadership. I’VE SEEN ENOUGH,” Grassley declared in a post on X.

Trump ripped into Wray during an interview with NBC’s Meet The Press on Sunday.
“Sir, are you going to fire the current FBI director, Christopher Wray, who you appointed?” host Kristen Welker asked.
Trump replied, “Well, I can’t say I’m thrilled with him. He invaded my home. I’m suing the country over it. He invaded Mar-a-Lago. I’m very unhappy with the things he — he’s done, and crime is at an all time high. Migrants are pouring into the country that are from prisons and from mental institutions, as we’ve discussed. I can’t say I’m thrilled. I don’t want to say — I don’t want to, again, I don’t want to be Joe Biden and give you an answer and then do the exact opposite — ”
