FBI Director Christopher Wray has just announced he will resign, according to a news broadcast by Fox News.
Wray has reportedly jumped ship ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, to avoid being fired by Trump.
Fox News correspondent David Spunt announced at about 2:00 pm ET that Wray is currently making an announcement at an all-staff town hall with thousands of FBI employees from across the country, and said now is his time to go.
Wray was 7 years into his 10-year term. He has not yet released a written announcement, so the date of when his resignation will be effective is still unclear.

The New York Times also reported:
The F.B.I. director, Christopher A. Wray, told bureau employees on Wednesday that he intended in January, bowing to the reality that President-elect Donald J. Trump had publicly declared his desire to replace him.
Mr. Wray made the disclosure while addressing employees Wednesday afternoon, according to two people familiar with the meeting. Mr. Wray added that he wanted to keep the focus on the bureau’s work.
The announcement comes after Mr. Trump said in late November that he intended to nominate Kash Patel, a longtime loyalist, to run the F.B.I., and more than two years before Mr. Wray’s 10-year term would have expired.
Wray, 57, was initially appointed as FBI Director by Trump and assumed office in August 2017, after Trump had fired former director James Comey.
However, Trump, and many other Republicans, have since come to distrust Wray over the way he has ‘weaponized’ the department against Trump and other conservatives. The FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago was the last straw for Trump.
Trump has nominated Kash Patel, the former defense secretary’s chief of staff and senior adviser to the National Security Council, as the new FBI Director.
Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) fired off a scorching 11-page letter to Wray on Monday, saying he has “no confidence” in his leadership, and demanded he step down.
