From CBS News: The father of Colt Gray, the teen suspect in the Apalachee High School shooting, has been arrested, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Thursday.

Colin Gray, 54, is being charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children, GBI said. The 14-year-old shooting suspect has been charged with four counts of felony murder.

GBI Director Chris Hosey said at a news conference Thursday night that the charges against Colin Gray stem from “knowingly allowing his son to possess a weapon.” He was in custody and being held at the Barrow County Detention Center, officials said Thursday.

His son, a student at Apalachee High School, allegedly killed four people, two students and two teachers, when he opened fire at the school in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday morning. Nine others were wounded and hospitalized, but they were all expected to survive and “make a full recovery,” Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said Thursday. Hospital officials said Thursday that at least seven of those nine patients had been treated and released, and at least one other remained hospitalized in stable condition.

The report explains that, according to Georgia law, minors are not allowed to own guns.

Mr. Gray reportedly admitted to authorities that he purchased the AR-style gun as a Christmas gift for his son in December 2023.  CNN wrote:

One source told CNN the AR-15-style rifle was purchased at a local gun store as a Christmas present. The timeline the teen’s father provided to authorities would put the gun purchase months after authorities first contacted Gray and his family to investigate school shooting threats made online.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation shared the following statement on social media Thursday evening:

A few notes from our 8 p.m. news conference today: Colin Gray was arrested on multiple charges earlier today. He knowingly allowed his son, Colt, to have the weapon.

This is a very difficult time for students & parents and many are afraid. You’ve likely seen reports of incidents of other students making threats today at schools around GA. In each of these incidents, police took charges & made arrests as we take each matter seriously.

This is a time for us a state to come together & remain vigilant. Students must be supported and encouraged to contact a member of school faculty with all concerns of suspicious activity.
