From NBC News: Washington, D.C, Mayor Muriel Bowser will not seek re-election to a fourth term, she told NBC-4 Washington in an interview that aired Tuesday.

She called the decision “the hardest thing I’ve had to do” and added she believes she’s “accomplished the things I set out to do” as mayor.

“It’s time for me to pass the baton on to the next set of leaders who are gonna take our city to the next level,” she said.

“I’ve learned how to be really good at my job and to be a good mayor. I know that there are a lot of people with ideas that can move this city forward. And, for me and for my family, now’s the time for me to do something else while I have a lot of energy and vigor and great ideas.”

Bowser announced her decision in a video statement posted on X Tuesday afternoon.

“It has been the honor of my life to be your Mayor. Together, we have built a legacy of success of which I am intensely proud. With a grateful heart, I am announcing that I will not seek a fourth term. For the next 12 months, let’s run through the tape and keep winning for DC,” she wrote.

Bowser also posted a letter announcing her decision:

Bowser has had a contentious relationship with President Donald Trump, especially during his first term in office, and infamously ordered a two-block-long Black Lives Matter slogan to be painted directly onto the street near the White House in 2020, amid the George Floyd riots.

The Democrat mayor has been more cooperative during Trump’s second term in office, and allowed the BLM mural to be removed in March.

Trump deployed the National Guard onto the streets of D.C. to clean up the city’s out-of-control crime wave.
