According to the LA Times, thirteen deaths have now been confirmed and over 12,000 structures have been damaged or destroyed in the wildfires that have swept through Los Angeles this week and wiped entire neighborhoods off the map.
Now, the fires are threatening new areas, and more evacuations have been ordered, including the community of Brentwood, where Fox News reporter Bill Melugin lives.
From the LA Times: A night of mass evacuations in Brentwood and Encino and the unnerving view of flames across the city has left Los Angeles on edge on Day 5 of the fire siege that has flattened more than 10,000 structures.
“We’re a nervous wreck,” said Sarah Cohen, 29, who lives with her parents in Braemar Country Club Estates, a gated community off Reseda Boulevard in Tarzana. “Every time they drop water, it gets better. But then it gets worse again.”
The Palisades fire grew by about 1,000 acres late Friday into Saturday in the Mandeville Canyon area, chewing through large swaths of the eastern Santa Monica Mountains — not far from the 405, threatening the communities of Brentwood and Encino.
Saturday morning, officials provided the following updates on the many fires in the LA area:
- Palisades Fire – Burned 22,660 acres, now 11% contained
- Eaton Fire – Burned 13,956 acres, now 15% contained
- Kenneth Fire – Burned 1,052 acres, now 80% contained
- Hurst Fire – Burned 779 acres, now 76% contained
Concerns are rising for the Mandeville Canyon area. The LA Times explained:
The Palisades fire on Saturday morning was close to Brentwood’s Mandeville Canyon Road, where large, multimillion dollar homes sit. Evacuation orders remained in place for large swaths of Brentwood and Encino, including MountainGate Country Club and the Getty Center.
The Getty Center in Brentwood — home to one of Los Angeles’ largest art collections — is complying with Friday evening’s evacuation order and is now closed, with only emergency staff on site, Ali Sivak, a spokeswoman for the J. Paul Getty Trust, said in a statement.
“If this fire gets into Mandeville Canyon…big problems,” Fox News reporter Bill Melugin warned Friday night.

In a chilling update, Fox News reporter Matt Finn announced before noon, “More devastating news. We are in densely populated Mandeville Canyon above Brentwood and homes are on fire. Fire slowly making its way down the canyon. This exposes entire regions of west LA to spread of fire.”

Journalist Collin Rugg announced, “The DC-10 tanker has dropped about 10,000 gallons of fire retardant to slow the fire in Brentwood. The move was made after there was a “significant” flare-up last night regarding the Palisades fire.
“The DC-10 was manufactured by McDonnell Douglas and is somewhat comparable to the Boeing 747 but is able to use shorter runways. The Palisades Fire grew by 1,000 acres overnight.”
