FROM NY POST: UMass Lowell was on lockdown after unfounded reports of a man with a gun walking near a residence hall on the first day of classes, as multiple local, state and federal law enforcement agencies swarmed the campus.
The college issued a community alert about the possible sightings of an armed individual, described as a “5’5 Asian male wearing a gray or white sweatshirt and black shorts carrying a long weapon” near the campus’ Riverview Suites.
Another alert went out urging students and faculty to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” and remain indoors until further notice.
Massachusetts State Police acknowledged a circulating online video purporting to show the suspect. Local police responded to the campus for an investigation, but the video’s authenticity remains unverified.
Police claimed the video, captured from a campus building window, shows the suspect with an AR-style rifle. However, the video’s authenticity hasn’t been confirmed. Upon arrival, police obtained the video.
Local and national media reported a substantial police presence at the school, including armored vehicles, K-9 units, and heavily armed officers in tactical gear.
Massachusetts Representative Lori Trahan issued a statement on X, expressing her active monitoring of the situation and urging local residents to follow Lowell police and UMass Lowell instructions.
