From CBS News: A former federal prosecutor was found dead Saturday morning at a home in Alexandria, Virginia, authorities said.

Officers with the Alexandria Police Department were dispatched to the home at 9:18 a.m. Eastern Time on a report of an unresponsive woman.

They arrived to find 43-year-old Jessica Aber, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, dead at the scene, police reported. It was not immediately clear if the home belonged to Aber, or who had contacted police.

In a statement posted on social media Saturday evening, the Alexandria Police Department said, “As a matter of protocol, an investigation is underway surrounding the circumstances of her death. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of Virginia will determine the cause and manner of death.”

Aber was nominated to the DOJ position in August 2021, and was confirmed by the Senate in a unanimous vote. She announced on January 17 that she would be resigning effective January 20, the day of President Trump’s inauguration.

Journalist Kyle Becker shared the following details:

Basic facts: “Jessica D. Aber, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was found dead at age 43 on the morning of Saturday, March 22, at her home in Alexandria. Police responded to a wellness check around 9:18 a.m. on Beverley Drive and found her unresponsive. No foul play is suspected at this time, and the cause of death is pending an investigation by the medical examiner.

Aber, appointed by President Biden in 2021, stepped down earlier this year to allow for a successor under President Trump. Known for her work on terrorism, white-collar crime, gang violence, and leaks of classified information, she was widely respected for her leadership, legal skill, and commitment to justice.

Colleagues described her as a sharp, compassionate leader and mentor, dedicated to restoring trust in law enforcement and building community relationships. Her unexpected death has deeply impacted those who worked with her throughout her legal career.”

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares wrote, “I am saddened to learn of the passing of Jessica Aber, whose career of public service included US Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia and whose work with Ceasefire Virginia saved more lives than we may ever realize. Our thoughts and our prayers are with her family this week.”
