BREAKING: 7.0 magnitude earthquake reported on West Coast, tsunami warning issued

From ABC News: A 7.0 magnitude earthquake was reported in Northern California on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The epicenter is near Petrolia, in Humboldt County, the USGS said.

Also, a tsunami warning has been issued for coastal areas in California and Oregon, including San Francisco. The warning will remain in effect from Davenport, California, to Douglas/Lane Line Oregon, until further notice, the National Tsunami Warning Center said.

The earthquake was reported at 10:44 a.m. local time, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.


Smaller aftershock earthquakes are reportedly occurring in surrounding areas.

In an update at noon Pacific Time, officials announced the tsunami warning has now been lifted.

An announcement by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services reads: “Per @USGS Tsunami Warning in effect. A tsunami Warning is now in effect which includes the coastal areas of California and Oregon from Davenport, California (10 miles NW of Santa Cruz) to Douglas/Lane Line, Oregon (10 miles SW of Florence). – Event details: Preliminary magnitude 7.3 (Mwp) earthquake / Lat: 40.348, Lon: -124.733 at 2024-12-05T18:44:24 UTC Tsunami warnings mean that a tsunami with significant inundation is expected or occurring. Warnings indicate that widespread dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents are possible and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.”

Social media users are posting videos of the aftermath, including swimming pools sloshing repeatedly.
