After several rogue Republicans balked at supporting President Trump’s nominee for United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, Ed Martin, Trump was forced to withdraw his nomination on Thursday. But now it appears Martin and President Trump are getting the “last laugh”.
Trump had appointed Martin to serve on an interim basis, pending his confirmation, but his term was due to expire on May 20. Several moderate Republicans were planning to withhold their support from Martin, and Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC) had stated he would not vote to approve him, meaning Martin would not even be able to get out of committee.
Thursday afternoon, Trump announced that Fox News host Jeanine Pirro, a former prosecutor and a former judge, will now serve as the interim U.S. Attorney for the DC District.
Later Thursday evening, the president announced in a Truth Social post that he has appointed Martin to a new role within the Department of Justice. It appears this position will not require Senate confirmation.
Tillis wouldn’t vote for Martin because he had served as defense counsel in multiple Jan. 6-related cases. Now, in a major chess move, Trump has given Martin authority to investigate “weaponization of the government” by the Biden administration.
Trump wrote:
Ed Martin has done an AMAZING job as interim U.S. Attorney, and will be moving to the Department of Justice as the new Director of the Weaponization Working Group, Associate Deputy Attorney General, and Pardon Attorney.
In these highly important roles, Ed will make sure we finally investigate the Weaponization of our Government under the Biden Regime, and provide much needed Justice for its victims. Congratulations Ed!
Minutes after Trump’s Truth Social post, Martin posted a victorious two-word statement on X: “Eagle Unleashed.”

Martin also responded to Trump’s formal announcement, writing, “Thank you, Mr. President. We will MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
