The casting of Cynthia Erivo as Jesus in the 2025 Hollywood Bowl production of Jesus Christ Superstar sparked significant controversy, and viral videos of her performance are sparking outrage.

Critics labeled the decision “blasphemous” and “an abomination,” arguing that portraying Jesus as a Black, queer woman undermines the historical and theological figure. Social media posts have called it a “desecration” and part of an attack on faith. Erivo, a Tony-winning actress known for Wicked, faced backlash since her casting was announced in February 2025, but responded by emphasizing the theatrical nature of the role. In a June 2025 Billboard interview, she quipped, “It’s a musical, the gayest place on Earth,” urging critics to focus on her performance.

Jesus Christ Superstar, a rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, reimagines the final days of Jesus Christ through the perspective of Judas Iscariot, exploring themes of betrayal, faith, and the cult of personality. The story, told entirely through song, delves into the personal struggles between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, and the Roman Empire. Adam Lambert, who is openly gay, plays Judas. Lambert defended Erivo’s casting, stating to Billboard that the musical is meant to “provoke and challenge” and that Jesus’ teachings should transcend gender. He praised Erivo’s “brilliant” voice and presence, calling their collaboration a dream.

The production, running August 1-3, 2025, directed by Tony winner Sergio Trujillo, sold out its 17,500 seats. Despite the controversy, supporters claim that Erivo’s casting aligns with the musical’s history of pushing boundaries and reinterpreting biblical narratives for modern audiences.
