From the Washington Examiner: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer‘s (D-NY) decision not to invite Senator-elect David McCormick (R-PA) to Senate orientation day was decried by Republicans.

McCormick was announced the winner of the 2024 Pennsylvania Senate election on Thursday, but incumbent Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) has refused to concede. In line with Casey’s refusal to concede, Schumer blocked McCormick from orientation day.

“With over 100,000 ballots left to be counted in Pennsylvania, the race has not been decided. As is custom, we will invite the winner once the votes are counted,” a Schumer spokesperson told the Washington Examiner in a statement.

Casey has been in the U.S. Senate since 2006.

With 99% of the votes in, the Associated Press has already called the race for McCormick on Thursday, Nov. 7.  As the vote count now stands, McCormick has 39,650 more votes than Casey, leaving practically no chance that Casey could make up the difference with the outstanding votes.

Pennsylvania Secretary of State Al Schmidt said Thursday, “Throughout the day, the Department has communicated with counties who continue to conduct a secure election where every eligible vote is counted. We estimate there are at least 100,000 ballots remaining to be adjudicated, including provisional, military, overseas, and Election Day votes. We urge patience as election workers continue to do this important work, especially in contests where the margins are very close.”

The Senate Republicans slammed Casey for refusing to concede the election.

“If Bob Casey was a good person, he would have conceded to @DaveMcCormickPA. Bob Casey lost fair and square, it’s time to admit it,” they wrote.

Republican senators are set to vote on Wednesday for who will be the next majority leader, beginning in January, as Sen. Mitch McConnell is stepping down.

Republicans are voicing their outrage over Schumer’s decision to exclude McCormick from the orientation activities this week.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) wrote, “Dave McCormick is the senator-elect & @SenSchumer’s move to not allow him to participate in orientation this week is disgusting. They did the same thing to me after I beat a Democrat in 2018. We have to fight this! AP called it. Dave won, Casey must concede NOW.”

Sen. John Thune (R-SD) wrote, “Dave McCormick is the new senator for Pennsylvania. The idea that Schumer would not allow him to participate in Senate orientation is beyond unacceptable. The voters of Pennsylvania have spoken. Looking forward to having Dave’s strong voice in the Senate Republican Conference.”

Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.) ripped into Schumer. He wrote, “Sen. Schumer is refusing to allow @DaveMcCormickPA to participate is Senate orientation next week even though the race has been called. Chuck is an “election denier” and this is an “assault on our democracy.” Am I doing this right @chuckschumer? Stop being a baby & take the L.”

Senator-elect Tim Sheehy (R-MT) didn’t mince any words. “This is BULLSHIT. Schumer is a lame duck. @DaveMcCormickPA should show up anyway. We’ve got a country to save!” he wrote.

At least three GOP senators are vowing to defy Schumer and personally escort McCormick to the orientation anyway.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) declared, “I’m willing to personally escort @DaveMcCormickPA into the Capitol for new-senator orientation. I’d like to see how they’d keep him out if he literally walked into “the room where it happens”.”

Sen. Ktie Britt (R-Ala.) responded, “I’ll be right there alongside you, Mike. @DaveMcCormickPA is the Senator-elect for Pennsylvania and deserves to be at orientation alongside every other member of his freshman class.”

Lee replied, “Fantastic! So glad that I’ll be joined by @KatieBrittforAL and @Eric_Schmitt in escorting @DaveMcCormickPA into the Capitol for “freshman orientation,” from which Schumer is trying to exclude McCormick.”

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) wrote, “Schumer is not allowing @DaveMcCormickPA to participate in Senate orientation this week because Casey refuses to concede the race. What happened to all the demands that our leaders accept the outcome of the elections?”

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) also blasted Schumer, writing, “Senator-elect Dave McCormick won. Chuck Schumer’s shameful, election-denying decision to block McCormick from Senate orientation shows Schumer’s true character.”

Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wy.) fiercely declared, “Schumer and Senate Democrats are denying the election results in #PASen. Trying to block @DaveMcCormickPA from attending Senate orientation this week is an outrage. Casey must concede immediately or Senate Democrats face consequences.”

Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) wrote, “.@AP declared @DaveMcCormickPA winner of #PASen 3 days ago. Denying legit election results & blocking @DaveMcCormickPA from participating in Sen. orientation this week is outrageous & a disservice PA & the country. Casey should concede. He has no path to overturn these results.”

Sen. Marsha Blackburn wrote, “Senator Schumer is playing petty politics by moving to block Senator-elect Dave McCormick from orientation. Pennsylvania voters have spoken, and they’ve chosen McCormick to represent them in the Senate. There’s nothing left to debate.”
