The California State Legislature has passed SB 867, a $10 billion climate bond designed to fund a wide range of climate resilience projects.
These initiatives include clean air programs, wildfire prevention, drought preparedness, and coastal resilience efforts. If voters approve the bond in November, it would mark a significant advance in California’s agenda to tackle perceived climate change and mitigate its effects.
Acting Governor Mike McGuire signed the legislation into law with robust support from numerous state legislators and environmental groups. According to proponents of the bond, they argue that the bond will provide critical resources to protect communities and natural landscapes from the increasing threats posed by climate change. The funding is expected to bolster existing climate initiatives and catalyze new projects aimed at enhancing the state’s environmental sustainability and resilience.
