AMBUSHED: Gunman opens fire on U.S. Border Patrol building, multiple officers injured

From CBS News: A shooter opened fire at a Border Patrol facility in McAllen, Texas, on Monday morning, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson said.

Border Patrol agents and local police helped “neutralize” the shooter, according to the spokesperson. Border Patrol’s Rio Grande Valley Sector, which has six stations along the border, reported that the person is dead.

The shooter was identified as 27-year-old Ryan Louis Mosqueda, who had an assault rifle and was carrying a utility vest, McAllen Police Chief Victor Rodriguez said Monday. Agents had returned fire and killed him, Rodriguez said.

Two officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured, with one of them shot in the knee, the DHS spokesperson said, adding that they went to the hospital.

WHO IS RYAN LOUIS MOSQUEDA?  The report explains that Mosqueda has a Michigan address, and arrived in Texas in a white, two-door sedan with a Michigan tag. “He was reported missing from a Weslaco, Texas, address at 4 a.m. Monday morning,” CBS writes, noting that he has no known criminal record.

Mosqueda reportedly “fired dozens of rounds toward the building” with agents inside at around 5:50 a.m.

After the shooting, law enforcement said they found a second rifle, more ammunition and backpacks that Mosqueda had brought with him.

Fox News reporter Bill Mulugin announced: “Three federal & TX law enforcement sources tell me an active shooter with a rifle & tactical gear ambushed Border Patrol agents as they arrived at a Border Patrol annex facility in McAllen, TX this morning. Local police and federal agents returned fire, killing him. I’m told this was a purposeful ambush/attack against federal agents and a press conference is planned for later this morning. No federal agents injured. Im told a McAllen police officer may have been shot, but is in stable condition. Photos via law enforcement sources.”

Sen. Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) commented, “Same day Axios reports liberal radicals are calling for violence at ICE facilities, TX border patrol targeted by a sniper. Law enforcement are under attack. I intro’ed a bill last month to crack down on assaults on federal officers but Dems blocked it.”

The Department of Homeland Security later clarified that three people were actually injured during the attack:

“This morning an individual opened fire at the entrance of the United States Border Patrol sector annex in McAllen, Texas. Both Border Patrol agents and local police helped neutralize the shooter. Two officers and a Border Patrol employee were injured, including one shot in the knee. All three have gone to the hospital. This is an ongoing investigation led by the @FBI.”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt hotly condemned the attack Tuesday afternoon saying, “We certainly call on Democrats to tone down their rhetoric against ICE and Border Patrol agents… These are honorable Americans who are simply trying to do their job.”
