From the Wall Street Journal: Federal authorities are investigating a clandestine effort to impersonate White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, according to people familiar with the matter, after an unknown individual reached out to prominent Republicans and business executives pretending to be her.
In recent weeks, senators, governors, top U.S. business executives and other well-known figures have received text messages and phone calls from a person who claimed to be the chief of staff, the people familiar with the messages said.
But the messages weren’t from Wiles—and the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the White House are trying to figure out who is behind the effort and what the goal is, according to some of the people. FBI officials have told the White House they don’t believe a foreign nation is involved, some of the people said.
Wiles, who managed President Trump’s successful 2024 presidential campaign, is widely known as his closest adviser. Trump named Wiles as his Chief of Staff just two days after he won the presidential election.
Given the years she has spent working in politics, Wiles had a substantial list of contacts in her phone, including many of the country’s most influential people. According to the report, the impersonator someone gained access to her list of contacts in her personal phone. Her government phone was not hacked.
The impersonator apparently used an artificial intelligence program to clone Wiles’ voice, and then made calls to several of her contacts. The impersonator even asked one lawmaker to put together a list of people who should be pardoned.
At least one person got a call asking for a cash transfer, which they quickly deemed to be suspicious.
The report notes that the impersonator is still at it, continuing to send messages to Wiles’ contacts. She has asked people to disregard the messages.
This isn’t the first time Wiles has been targeted. Her email was hacked last year during Trump’s presidential campaign by Iranian operatives.
