AI AIRLINES: Major airliner denies using artificial intelligence to set ticket pricing

Delta Airlines said Thursday it does not use AI to set flight prices, responding to criticism from Democratic Senators Ruben Gallego, Mark Warner, and Richard Blumenthal.

In a letter, Delta stated its prices are based on market dynamics and strong competition: “There is no fare product Delta has ever used, is testing, or plans to use that targets customers with individualized prices based on personal data. Our ticket pricing never takes into account personal data.”

Delta said it’s testing AI technology from Fetcherr in a pilot program to help forecast demand, streamline pricing analysis, and adapt to market changes. The system supports analysts by reducing manual work and improving response time.

Delta’s letter responded to lawmakers’ concerns that it may use AI to set individual fares, which could lead to higher prices. The concern stemmed from a December comment by Delta President Glen Hauenstein about AI predicting what customers would pay for premium upgrades. Delta clarified it’s exploring AI to improve customer service, crew scheduling, and other operations, not to set individual fares.
