Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) criticized President-elect Trump’s pick for national intelligence director, Tulsi Gabbard, calling her “likely a Russian asset.”
The comment reflects ongoing pushback against some of Trump’s cabinet selections.
“There’s no question I consider her someone who is likely a Russian asset,” Wasserman Schultz said on MSNBC on Friday.
Gabbard’s nomination as national intelligence director marks a significant shift for the former Democrat, who was long accused of promoting Russian narratives. She has challenged U.S. intelligence conclusions on Russia and Ukraine, including claims about U.S. involvement in Ukraine’s biological weapons development. In 2022, Sen. Mitt Romney accused her of spreading “treasonous lies” that echoed Russian propaganda. Gabbard also criticized the Biden administration for not addressing Russia’s concerns during its Ukraine invasion.

“This war and suffering could have easily been avoided if Biden Admin/NATO had simply acknowledged Russia’s legitimate security concerns regarding Ukraine’s becoming a member of NATO, which would mean US/NATO forces right on Russia’s border,” she wrote on X at the time.
In a 2019 interview, Hillary Clinton mentioned Russian media support concerning Gabbard, labeling the former congresswoman a “favorite of the Russians.”
