Self-deportation is underway as illegal immigrants in the US seek a safe haven amid the Trump administration’s deportation efforts.
There is a surge of immigrants at Canada’s border, with some ports seeing a massive increase in crossings as asylum seekers aim to dodge ICE in the US.
The Daily Mail reports:
The busiest land port between New York and Quebec received 761 asylum claims in the first six days of July. That’s more than quadruple the amount from the same period last year, says Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
The number of asylum applications at St-Bernard, which is about an hour south of Montreal and within reach of such major US cities as New York and Boston, are up by 82 percent overall this year.
These border ports are seeing immigrants from Latin America, Africa, and the Caribbean. The surge is also coming from immigrants used to taking advantage of now-defunct humanitarian programs. Now, hundreds of thousands of people who were previously able to live and work in the US must find somewhere else to go, or self-deport back to Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, Venezuela, and other nations.
Canada, which is often regarded as having a more liberal immigration policy, may not be the answer. The Mail reports that Ottawa “has been adopting increasingly restrictive policies of its own after a Trudeau-era surge sent housing prices skyrocketing.”
People are leaving Canada like it’s a recession.
