Matthew 26:36-39

36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.

37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.

38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.

39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

Prior to giving His life on the cross for the sins of the whole world, Jesus spent time in prayer with His Heavenly Father, in the Garden of Gethsemane.

There was never any question that He would refuse to submit himself to what He had been sent to the world to do, but it is clear that the Lord allowed Him to experience the anguish of this moment. But He was willing to pray, “Oh Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless, not my will, but Thine be done.”

When we face our own “garden experiences,” where we struggle with human nature and the many choices before us, we can do so knowing that the same power that gave Jesus the strength to pray, “Not my will, but Thine by done,” will give us the strength to utter the same words.

Because He lives, I can face tomorrow.
Because He lives, all fear is gone.
Because I know He holds the future,
and life is worth the living, just because He lives.
