Psalm 73:2-5
2 But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.
3 For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4 For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.
5 They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.
It’s easy to get discouraged when we can’t see the whole picture, and in this psalm, the writer was definitely discouraged, and about to give up, because it appeared that the wicked and the ungodly were the ones who were prospering. It appeared they had no troubles or obstacles.
Later, the psalmist wrote, “Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.”
Finally, he added, “For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish… But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord God, that I may declare all thy works.”
Psalm 37 is the perfect answer. It begins, “Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.”
This doesn’t mean we should ignore evil, and it doesn’t mean that we should dismiss it or not stand up against it.
But the scripture does assure us that God is still on the throne, and we shouldn’t ever lose faith in Him. We shouldn’t get discouraged and think that God doesn’t care, or isn’t watching.
Psalm 37:18 says, “The Lord knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever.”
“Dear Heavenly Father, help us to trust in Your timing and Your judgements. Help us to leave in Your hands all we cannot understand, to trust in Your leading where we cannot see, and to be faithful with what You give us today. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.”
