From NY Post: President Trump announced Monday that the US will not attack any part of Iran’s power and energy infrastructure for five days after Washington and Tehran had engaged in “very good and productive talks” over the weekend about ending the three-week-old war.
The president had given Iran 48 hours to reopen the vital Strait of Hormuz as of Saturday evening, vowing that if the regime did not, “the United States of America will hit and obliterate their various POWER PLANTS, STARTING WITH THE BIGGEST ONE FIRST!”
But on Monday morning, hours before the deadline, Trump announced the change.
“I am pleased to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East,” Trump wrote. “Based on the tenor and tone of these in depth, detailed, and constructive conversations, which will continue throughout the week, I have instructed the Department of War to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions.”
He did not offer additional details.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps had threatened to retaliate if Trump attacked its power network, saying it could hit Israeli and Gulf countries’ power plants, which also provide energy to American bases.
The IRGC called the idea of hitting power “inhumane,” citing disruptions to hospitals, emergency centers, water systems, and desalination plants.
“You hit our hospitals, we did not do the same. You hit our relief centers, we did not do the same. You hit our schools, we did not do the same,” it said in a statement. “But if you hit electricity, we will hit electricity.”
“We are determined to respond to any threat at the same level in a way that creates deterrence and we will do this,” the IRGC added.
