Who Are You?

“But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?'”

Exodus 3:11

The story of Moses spans from a fragile basket in the Nile to the mountaintop where he viewed the Promised Land he would never enter. Despite dramatic highs and lows, God shaped him into one of Scripture’s greatest leaders. Here are profound lessons from his journey:

1. God often calls the most unlikely people. Raised in Pharaoh’s palace, Moses became a fugitive murderer hiding in Midian for forty years. When God spoke from the burning bush, Moses’ excuses were filled with self-doubt. Yet God assured him of His presence. Your background, failures, or feelings of inadequacy don’t disqualify you—God’s presence qualifies you.

2. Obedience matters more than perfect confidence. Moses questioned his ability to speak or lead, even asking God to send someone else. Still, he stepped forward in faith. Small acts of obedience, even when we feel weak, open the door for God’s power. The parting of the Red Sea, the manna from heaven, and water from the rock all flowed from Moses’ willingness to obey despite his doubts.

3. Humility is the path to true strength. Numbers 12:3 describes Moses as “very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the earth.” His meekness allowed him to depend completely on God. When we surrender pride and self-reliance, God can work powerfully through us.

4. God’s purposes prevail even when we fall short. Moses’ one major failure—striking the rock instead of speaking to it—cost him entry into Canaan. Yet God still used him faithfully until the end, and the mission continued through Joshua. Our mistakes have consequences, but they don’t cancel God’s redemptive plan. Moses foreshadows Jesus, the greater Deliverer who perfectly obeyed, humbled Himself, and leads us to the ultimate Promised Land. As we face our own wilderness seasons, remember that the same God who called Moses today calls us. He equips, walks with, and accomplishes His will through imperfect people who trust Him.

Lord, Thank You for blessing me with gifts that allow me to serve You. Like Moses, I often feel inadequate for what You ask. Help me trust Your presence more than my abilities. Teach me humble obedience, and use my life for Your glory. Amen.
