Navigating Tension: Forgiving and Doing Good in God’s Service

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Ephesians 4:31-32 (NIV)

In the midst of relationship tensions—whether it’s a strained marriage, a fractured friendship, festering family issues, or conflicts at work—it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by hurt, frustration, or even resentment. Tough situations test our patience and reveal the cracks in our hearts. Yet, as followers of Christ, we’re called to a higher path: one of forgiveness and doing good, even when it feels undeserved.

Why? Because these acts aren’t just about resolving earthly disputes; they serve God by mirroring His boundless grace toward us.

Even while He was on the cross, Jesus was praying for those who crucified Him: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34).

In our own trials, choosing to forgive releases us from the prison of bitterness and aligns us with God’s redemptive work. Doing good, offering kindness to the unkind, and extending help in hostile environments transforms potential battlegrounds into testimonies of faith.

As Romans 12:21 urges, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

This isn’t weakness; it’s divine strength at work, turning our pain into purpose and glorifying God through our obedience.

Today, identify a tense relationship or tough situation in your life. Ask God for the courage to forgive, even if reconciliation isn’t immediate. Then, take one small step to do good: send an encouraging message, offer a listening ear, or pray for the person involved. Remember, your actions aren’t for human approval but to honor the One who forgave you first. In serving others this way, you’re serving Him (Matthew 25:40).

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your forgiveness. My sin is great and endless, yet Your grace covers it. In the storms of relationship tension, help me to let go of grudges and embrace Your forgiveness. Empower me to do good, even when it’s hard, knowing that it brings glory to Your name. Teach me to see others through Your eyes of compassion, and use these trials to draw me closer to You. In Jesus’ I pray name, Amen.
