From NY Post: Mojtaba Khamenei — the expected next supreme leader — was reportedly wounded in an Israeli air strike.
The son of Iran’s slain Ayatollah Ali Khamenei survived an assassination attempt made by Israel during the devastating launch of Lion’s Roar military operation Feb. 28, which occurred in tandem with the US’s Operation Epic Fury, Times of Israel reported on Saturday.
Other strikes in the joint military attack killed his father and roughly 40 other high-ranking Islamic Republic leaders.
Also killed was Mojtaba’s wife, Zahra Haddad Adel, who came from a family long associated with the country’s theocracy.
The reported injuries sustained by Mojtaba, 56, are unknown. It is also unclear whether he was injured when his father died in the Ayatollah’s compound, or if he was targeted in a separate attack on the regime.
Mojtaba, known for supporting his father’s hardline conservatism and anti-Western sentiments, is favored to succeed his father, but some Assembly of Experts members have raised concerns about his succession.
President Trump condemned Motjaba’s likely appointment as “unacceptable” for the US and vowed that it would not bring an end to the war.
“They are wasting their time. Khamenei’s son is a lightweight,” Trump said earlier this week. “We want someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran.”
The assembly is set to meet in 24 hours to choose a new supreme leader.
