From the Washington Examiner: A U.S. submarine sunk an Iranian warship off Sri Lanka’s coast in the Indian Ocean, War Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed during a Wednesday morning press conference.

Hegseth said the enemy ship “thought it was safe in international waters,” but it was ultimately “sunk by a torpedo.” He called it the “first sinking of an enemy ship by a torpedo since World War II.”

Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, clarified that it was the first time a warship was sunk by a U.S. submarine since 1945.

The New York Times had reported earlier: An Iranian naval ship with a crew of 180 sank in the Indian Ocean on Wednesday off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, officials in the country said. About 30 people were rescued and a search was underway for any other survivors.

The Times said Sri Lankan officers “rescued 32 critically injured sailors,” who were taken to the local hospital, but noted that the ship was nowhere to be seen. Gen. Caine said in the press conference that the warship was sent “to the bottom of the sea.”

“Last night, we sunk their prize ship, The Soleimani. Looks like POTUS got him twice,” Hegseth quipped, referring to the killing of former Iranian military officer Qasem Soleimani, who the U.S. military assassinated in June 2020, during President Trump’s first term in office.

The Department of War then posted a video of the ship being blown to bits.

Gen. Caine gave an update on the progress of the operation against Iran during the Pentagon press briefing Wednesday morning:
