MORNING DEVOTIONAL (February 8)

2

James 3:5-6
5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

Isaiah 50:4
The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

Our tongue is a powerful thing – perhaps the most powerful thing we have. If our tongue is out of control, it can ruin others lives, and our own. But when controlled by the love of God, our tongue can be a blessing to all we meet. Words can start a war, or bring peace among nations. Words can destroy relationships, or build friendships. Words can hurt or heal.

Words can leave wounds and scars that last a lifetime, or words can bring people together to achieve great things they would have never dreamed of. Words can extinguish dreams, or inspire excellence.

“Dear Heavenly Father, I’m forever grateful for the words of others who have inspired and encouraged me, and for every time when Your words have lifted me up and given me peace. Help me to have a word in season to those who are weary and discouraged today. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”
