ARRESTED: FBI nabs Dictator Maduro’s top money man in Venezuela after Biden had released him

From BreitbartColombian businessman Alex Saab, widely considered to be Nicolás Maduro’s top money launderer, was arrested in Caracas on Wednesday as part of a join U.S. – Venezuela operation, several outlets reported.

Both Colombia’s Caracol Radio and El Colombiano, citing unnamed sources, report Saab was apprehended during a joint operation between the FBI and Venezuelan authorities.

Reuters, citing a U.S. law enforcement official, also reported on the joint U.S.-Venezuela operation to arrest Saab, who is expected to be extradited to the United States “in the coming days.”

Saab had been charged in the U.S. with using the American financial system to launder roughly $350 million from Venezuelan state funds. In 2023, he was released from U.S. custody and returned to Venezuela in a prisoner swap with the Biden administration. There, Maduro welcomed him as a hero and appointed him as industry minister, a post he held until being removed in mid-January by interim leader Delcy Rodríguez.

Reports say Saab may soon be extradited to the U.S., though his lawyer has denied the recent arrest, and Venezuelan officials have not officially confirmed it.

“I am a congressman; this is not within my area of expertise, and I have no authority or information regarding the matter you are raising,” Rodríguez said.

In addition to Saab, reports from Caracol Radio and Reuters say Venezuelan businessman Raúl Gorrín was also arrested during the joint operation.

Gorrín, a longtime fugitive with close ties to Nicolás Maduro, was charged by a federal grand jury in South Florida in 2024 over a $1.2 billion money-laundering scheme. In 2013, he acquired an 80% stake in Globovisión, which had once been a sharp critic of the socialist regime but later softened its coverage. The Trump administration sanctioned Gorrín in 2019, accusing him of corruption and exploiting Venezuela’s currency controls to reap more than $2.4 billion in illicit proceeds.
