From Fox News: A longtime House Republican who sits on Congress’ powerful tax-writing committee is retiring after 20 years on Capitol Hill.

Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., announced on Tuesday that he will not be seeking re-election, ending a two-decade-long career in Washington at the age of 74.

He’s the 28th Republican to join what appears to be a mass exodus from the House of Representatives after the current term. Twenty-one House Democrats will also not seek re-election to the chamber.

Buchanan has served in U.S. Congress since 2007.

In a statement post on social media, Buchanan wrote, “After 20 years serving Southwest Florida, I’ve decided it’s time to pass the torch and begin a new chapter. Serving you has been the honor of my lifetime, and I’m deeply grateful for the trust you placed in me.”

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) responded, writing, “.@VernBuchanan is a great friend and has done a fantastic job representing our state for many years. Over his tremendous career, he has been a relentless fighter for Florida and has championed policies to make life better for every American. I’m so grateful for all the support he has given to me, and I wish him and Sandy all the success.”

The Florida Republican Party wrote, “Thank you, Congressman @VernBuchanan, for two decades of service to Southwest Florida and the State of Florida. A record of results, leadership, and dedication. We wish him well in his next chapter.”

America First Insight wrote, “Congressman Vern Buchanan will NOT run for reelection. This opens up an R+15 district. The heavy favorite for this seat would be his son, James Buchanan, who is a member of the Florida State House. This is the third open Florida seat for 2026.”
