From Fox Business: President Donald Trump on Monday reiterated that he is weighing whether to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug, a statement that mirrors similar comments he made earlier this year and during his 2024 presidential campaign.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, the president said he was considering an executive order to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule III drug.
“We are considering that. A lot of people want to see it, the reclassification, because it leads to tremendous amounts of research that can’t be done unless you reclassify,” Trump said on Monday.
“So we are looking at that very strongly,” he continued.
🚨 Q: Are you considering an executive order to reclassify marijuana?
PRESIDENT TRUMP: Yes. Because a lot of people want to see the reclassification – it leads to tremendous amounts of research, that can’t be done, unless you reclassify it. We are looking at that very strongly. pic.twitter.com/OQ1MmI4YC2

The report explains that marijuana is currently listed as a Schedule I substance, which puts it in the same category as heroin, ecstasy and peyote, implying it has a high potential for abuse and no currently accepted medical use. On the other hand, Schedule III drugs include Tylenol mixed with codeine, ketamine and testosterone.
If marijuana is rescheduled to be a Schedule III drug, it would be a boost to the cannabis industry.
Democrat Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (NY) wrote on X, “I’m urging President Trump to listen to the American people & loosen restrictions on marijuana. It’s an economic, medical, & public safety issue. Reclassifying marijuana is progress, & I’ll continue my fight to legalize marijuana & expunge prior marijuana possession convictions.”

Trump reclassifying marijuana would be some of his best politics in a long time. It’d be a great issue against Dems.
Why?
-Most Americans think it should be legal (64% vs. 12%! in 1969)
-It’s especially popular with younger voters, who have swung wildly in recent elections pic.twitter.com/alAusrW2j2— (((Harry Enten))) (@ForecasterEnten) December 16, 2025
Meanwhile, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is still fighting the last-minute provision snuck into the government funding bill by Sen. Mitch McConnell which would severely restrict the hemp industry.
Paul announced Tuesday:
“Our state legislature studied the issue, regulated it, and children can’t buy hemp products. In Kentucky, there are fines, and you can go to jail for selling it to children. None of what’s being sold here is going to children; it is regulated and tested. It is something that is not harming people.”
“So, I think you ought to have the right to choose how you seek to fix your problems—whatever those problems would be . . . We have 300-and-some days until the end of this deadline that has been set for us by Congress, but the real deadline is much sooner than that. Our farmers need clarity now to start planning for next year’s crop.”
I joined Cornbread Hemp at their ribbon cutting for their newest facility in Louisville. I am fighting to stop this industry-ending ban and standing up for our farmers. Thank you for having me, @CornbreadHemp.

Sen. Rand Paul came to Cornbread Hemp’s ribbon cutting: hemp was legalized in 2018 by Sen. Mitch McConnell and now faces a ban by the same man. This could ban products + the plant. Thank you for advocating for Kentucky Hemp @SenRandPaul! pic.twitter.com/H8YK389Sfj
