From Daily Mail: A person of interest is in custody after two people were killed and multiple were injured in a mass shooting at Brown University in Rhode Island Saturday evening.
Police confirmed an unidentified male in his 30s was taken into custody at the Hampton Inn in Coventry early Sunday morning.
Providence Police Chief Col. Oscar Perez did not specify if the man is connected to Ivy League and did not state he was a suspect.
The shooter, who was armed with a handgun, fired more than 40 9mm rounds, law enforcement officials said.
The gun used in the attack has not been recovered, but police recovered two loaded 30-round magazines, an anonymous official told the Associated Press.
On Saturday night, police released images of a person of interest in the case. The same man was detained by police at around 3 am, CNN reports.
CNN reports:
A law enforcement source says the person of interest was detained at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, near the Providence airport. A CNN crew staying at the hotel saw officers bang on a person’s door and call for them to come out, as a large federal and local law enforcement presence gathered outside the building. A hotel guest described to reporters what he saw when he came down for breakfast.
The guest, Mark LaFountaine, told reporters outside the hotel that he didn’t see the person get taken into custody but saw plenty of police officers, US Marshals and FBI agents.
LaFountaine said he had been watching the news on Saturday night about the shooting and was aware of the search for a suspect.
“I woke up, came downstairs, and I said, ‘What are all these cops doing here?’” LaFountaine said, adding that he could sense there was “something going on” beyond the officers simply staying at the hotel.
