TINA PETERS CASE: Top Colorado Democrat officials respond to Trump’s ‘meaningless’ pardon

7

President Donald Trump announced Thursday evening that he is granting a ‘full pardon’ for former Colorado county clerk Tina Peters, who is currently serving a 9-year sentence after she was declared guilty of “participating in a scheme to breach the Mesa County voting systems.”

However, Peters was charged by the state of Colorado, and not by the federal government, so Trump’s ‘pardon’ still won’t free her from prison unless Colorado officials honor it – something they have declared they will NOT do.

Peters, now 70, was sentenced to 9 years in prison in October 2024 by a Democrat-appointed judge for her well-intentioned efforts to preserve records on Dominion voting machines after the 2020 election. She was indicted in March 2022 after prosecutors accused her of improperly permitting someone to copy access passwords and other files from a voting system. She is considered as a whistleblower by conservatives.

Multiple Colorado officials responded Thursday night to President Trump’s pardon announcement, and insist they will not free Peters.

Governor Jared Polis, a Democrat, fired off a statement denouncing Trump’s ‘pardon’ for Peters, and declared, “Tina Peters was convicted by a jury of her peers, prosecuted by a Republican District Attorney, and found guilty of violating Colorado state laws, including criminal impersonation. No President has jurisdiction over state law nor the power to pardon a person for state convictions. This is a matter for the courts to decide, and we will abide by court orders.”

Polis, who is currently serving his second term as governor of Colorado, is term-limited and cannot seek re-election in 2026.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, also a Democrat, posted a video message on X, and sneered, “Tina Peters is in Colorado state prison because she broke the law and was convicted by a jury of her peers. In Colorado, no one is above the law. I’m not afraid of Donald Trump or his political pressure—I will always stand up for the rule of law and fight for what’s right.”

Incidentally, Weiser is running for governor of Colorado, to replace Polis in 2026.

And Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold, whose office ‘unintentionally’ leaked voting equipment passwords online last year, said in a statement Thursday that “Tina Peters was convicted by a jury of her peers for state crimes in a state Court. Trump has no constitutional authority to pardon her. His assault is not just on our democracy, but on states’ rights and the American constitution.”

Griswold, another Democrat, is also a part of the game of musical chairs in Colorado. She is running for Colorado State Attorney General, to replace Weiser, who is running for governor to replace Polis.

Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib, an American whose parents are immigrants from Lebanon, also released a defiant statement on President Trump’s “meaningless” pardon.

“We’re not surprised by President Trump shouting into the wind and issuing a meaningless pardon for his friend and fellow election denier Tina Peters. The President has no legal authority to demand her release,” he declared.

“She was convicted by a jury of her peers on state charges and she should remain in state custody. For a president who obviously doesn’t respect the rule of law, this is not surprising. Nobody is above the law, not even the president’s friends,” Murib sneered.

Tina Peters’ attorney, Peter Ticktin, had written a letter earlier this week, asking President Trump to pardon his client, noting that she is a “necessary and material witness” and can testify against Griswold about the 2020 election.

In his letter, he alleged that Secretary of State Jena Griswold had ordered all 2020 election data be wiped clean from the Dominion voting machines.

Ticktin said Peters was performing her duty as County Clerk to preserve the evidence of the election for 22 months. Once Griswold realized Peters had the only copy of the 2020 election data, she demanded criminal charges be brought against Peters.
