NEWS ALERT: Judge decides on cameras, scolds media during court hearing for man accused of assassinating Charlie Kirk

So far, cameras will be allowed during court proceedings of Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old man charged in the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk, a judge announced on Thursday – although a final decision on the entire trial has not been made.

Robinson made his first in-person court appearance on Thursday, and his legal team has already launched a complaint against the media, who was allowed in the room during the hearing.

Judge Ton Graf of the Utah Fourth District Court, who is overseeing the case, had previously ordered that Robinson would be allowed to wear civilian clothes when appearing publicly in court, and his shackles were not to be filmed at all, in order to not taint the case or prejudice jurors.

Defense attorneys claimed on Thursday that those live-streaming the court proceedings violated the decorum order by making Robinson’s shackles visible, and claimed that audio of his attorney’s conversations were recorded and live-streamed.

The defense also claimed that their computers were captured on camera.

An attorney for the press said capture of the shackles on camera was inadvertent and they will make every effort to never do it again.  However, he argued that terminating the cameras from the courtroom would be extreme.

The judge ordered the cameras to be moved to a different place in the room, but allowed them to remain. However, he said any further violations would result in cameras being removed.

News Nation correspondent Brian Entin, one of the reporters in the room, wrote, “I have to say – I was surprised how close the camera was to Tyler Robinson and his defense table. Never seen it allowed that close.”

The judge said he wants to take more time to consider his decision on whether to unseal the recording and transcript of an October 24 hearing, in order to “get it right.”
