The Pattern for Servanthood

But Jesus called them to Himself and said, ‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.'”

Matthew 20:25-28 (NKJV)

In a world that often equates greatness with power, influence, and status, Jesus provides a different blueprint for true greatness: servanthood.

The disciples were caught up in the desire for recognition and prominence. Jesus redirects this ambition, explaining that in His kingdom, greatness is not measured by how many people serve you, but by how many people you serve.

Jesus Himself is the ultimate example. Though He is the Son of God, He chose humility over honor, service over status. His entire life was marked by acts of compassion, healing, teaching, and ultimately, sacrificing His life for humanity. He didn’t just teach servanthood, He embodied it.

Lord Jesus, thank You for showing us the true pattern of servanthood. Help me to follow Your example, to seek opportunities to serve with humility and love. Teach me to value others above myself, and to find joy in giving rather than receiving. In Your loving name I pray, AMEN.
