REPORT: Six ‘forgotten’ Thanksgiving dishes your grandparents actually served at holiday tables

5

From Fox News: Thanksgiving may be a time for turkey — but for many people, the real stars of the holiday table have been the sides.

While mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and mac and cheese might be the most popular dishes to pass around the table, the spreads of decades ago looked very different.

From oyster stuffing to rich gravies that didn’t let any part of the bird go to waste, several dishes tell the story of how America used to cook and celebrate.

The report then lists and describes the six “forgotten” Thanksgiving dishes that were once popular on the national holiday.

However, the list includes some items that are actually still very popular in some areas:

  • Oyster stuffing
  • Ambrosia salad
  • Mashed turnips
  • Corn pudding
  • Giblet gravy
  • Cranberry fluff

One X user shared the recipe for Ambrosia Salad:

Hate to tell you this but people still make Ambrosia Salad. It is my daughter’s favorite. Wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without it.

Ingredients are:
1. Large can mixed fruit drained
2.Small can mandarin oranges drained
3. Bag of miniature marshmallows
4. Dream whip (add to your taste)
5.Sour cream (add to your taste)
6. Coconut flakes (add to your taste)
