ORIGINAL REPORT BELOW:
Just one day before Thanksgiving, two National Guard members deployed to Washington, D.C. have been shot just blocks away from the White House Wednesday afternoon.

According to a statement from the National Guard Joint Task Force, the shooting happened near the busy Farragut West Metro Station.

CBS News reported that law enforcement officials described it as an ambush-style attack and said 10 to 15 shots were fired.

The suspect was reportedly then shot as many as 4 times, and was transported to the hospital. The suspect is now in police custody, according to officials.

The D.C. Police Department first announced at 2:42 pm ET, “Critical Incident: MPD is on the scene of a shooting at 17th and I Street, NW. Please avoid the area. Updates to come.”

Police later announced in an update, “The scene is secured. One suspect is in custody.”

West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey first reported that the two National Guard members had died, but that has since been retracted, as authorities say they were badly wounded and have been rushed to the hospital.

“We are now receiving conflicting reports about the condition of our two Guard members and will provide additional updates once we receive more complete information. Our prayers are with these brave service members, their families, and the entire Guard community,” Morrisey later wrote.

FBI Director Kash Patel wrote, “FBI is engaged and assisting with the investigation in Washington, D.C. after National Guard members were shot this afternoon. Please pray for them and we will update with more information as we are able.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi wrote, “Federal agents are on the scene of the horrific shooting of 2 National Guardsmen in Washington, DC. PRAY for our DC National Guard.”

President Donald Trump, who is at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida for the Thanksgiving holiday, reacted in a statement posted on Truth Social.

“The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price. God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!” Trump wrote.

While speaking to U.S. service members at Fort Campbell in Kentucky, Vice President JD Vance asked for prayers for the two guardsmen.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem wrote on X, “Please join me in praying for the two National Guardsmen who were just shot moments ago in Washington D.C. @DHSgov is working with local law enforcement to gather more information.”
