BREAKING: CAIR sues Texas Governor after terrorist designation

From Breitbart: The Council on American‑Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil‑liberties group, filed a federal lawsuit against Texas Governor Greg Abbott after he designated CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist and transnational criminal organizations. CAIR called the designation “unconstitutional and defamatory.”

Abbott’s proclamation, which bars the groups and affiliates from acquiring land in Texas and authorizes heightened enforcement actions, drew immediate backlash from CAIR, which blasted the designation as “unconstitutional and defamatory” and accused the governor of targeting American Muslims for their advocacy.

As reported by Breitbart Texas, Abbott designated the Council on American-Islamic Relations and the Muslim Brotherhood as foreign terrorist organizations and transnational criminal organizations on Tuesday. The designation allows authorities within the Lone Star State to take heightened enforcement actions against the organization and its affiliates.

Shortly after signing the declaration, in a press release issued at the state capitol, Abbott offered the following comments regarding the designation, saying, “The Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR have long made their goals clear: to forcibly impose Sharia law and establish Islam’s ‘mastership of the world. The actions taken by the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR to support terrorism across the globe and subvert our laws through violence, intimidation, and harassment are unacceptable.”

In a Fox News interview, Abbott doubled down, saying the Texas Constitution does not allow Sharia law, and said there are at least two Sharia courts in the Dallas area.

CAIR announced their lawsuit in a press release on Thursday, and wrote:

The Muslim Legal Fund of America (MLFA), the CAIR Legal Defense Fund (CAIR LDF) and Akeel & Valentine, PLC today announced that they have filed a federal lawsuit against Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton to block enforcement of Abbott’s “unconstitutional and defamatory” Nov. 18th proclamation, which falsely declared the Texas chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations a “foreign terrorist organization” and threatened various civil penalties against the civil rights organization if it continues to serve the people of Texas.

In a statement, CAIR-Texas said:

“CAIR-Texas and the Texas Muslim community are standing up for our constitutional rights by directly confronting Greg Abbott’s lawless attack on our civil rights. We are not and will not be intimidated by smear campaigns launched by Israel First politicians like Mr. Abbott. Mr. Abbott is defaming us and other American Muslims because we are effective advocates for justice here and abroad. We plan to continue exercising our constitutional rights, defending civil rights, and speaking truth to power, whether in defense of free speech, religious freedom and racial equality here in Texas or in defense of human rights abroad.”

CAIR executive director Nihad Awad re-posted a creepy video, complete with Islamic music, condemning Abbott for naming them as a terrorist organization.

“Urgent/ The Legal Defense Fund affiliated with CAIR, in partnership with the Muslim Legal Fund of America (MLFA), has filed a federal lawsuit against Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton to halt the enforcement of an unconstitutional and defamatory announcement targeting CAIR–Texas,” Awad announced.

The Muslim community in Texas has been growing their numbers for years, and has now gotten such a foothold in the state that they are fighting back, declaring their rights are being violated.

CAIR-Texas Houston made a call to action in a social media post:

EXANS: TAKE ACTION NOW 🚨 Governor Abbott is promoting dangerous, anti-Muslim conspiracy theories, and abusing state power to smear CAIR-Texas as a “foreign terrorist organization.”

This proclamation is unconstitutional, defamatory, and puts the rights and safety of Muslim Texans at risk.

✊ Join CAIR, CAIR-Texas, and CAIR Action in demanding that state lawmakers:

✅ Reject this baseless proclamation
✅ Condemn anti-Muslim bigotry
✅ Defend the rights of Muslim organizations and families across Texas

📣 Your voice matters. Tell your lawmakers to act now.

In another post on Friday, CAIR National wrote:

We want to take a moment to applaud the courage of our CAIR-Texas team. The very next day after Governor @GregAbbott_TX issued his unconstitutional and defamatory proclamation, the CAIR-Texas team went to work as usual while signing off on a federal lawsuit and preparing to testify at a state Board of Education hearing in defense of student rights.

Before that hearing started, security warned members of our CAIR-Texas team that a suspicious individual had entered the building and demanded to know if any CAIR leaders were present. While this man was searching for our staff, the CAIR-Texas team was given the option of leaving the building with a police escort. They declined. Each of them stayed and delivered their testimony.

As a civil rights organization, CAIR was founded to both shield the American Muslim community from hate and protect every American’s right to exercise free speech, practice their own faith, and speak up for justice here and abroad. Being a shield means taking arrows.

CAIR-Texas has been a shining example of courage under fire and an inspiration to our entire organization, alhamdulillah (praise and thanks to God). We applaud them, we stand with them, and we encourage all Americans to continue speaking up for due process, free speech, and religious freedom in the face of Greg Abbott’s latest attempt to silence critics of a foreign government.
