WATCH: Mexico erupts in violent protests against President Claudia Sheinbaum, Morena party

FROM BLOOMBERG: Protests against President Claudia Sheinbaum turned violent in Mexico City on Saturday as frustration mounts over the government’s inability to stop violence and provide opportunities amid a slowing economy.

After hours of clashes, police regained control of the area. Pablo Vazquez, Mexico City’s chief of police, said that 20 people were arrested and will be charged with battery, assault and robbery. He added that 60 police officers were injured, 40 of whom were hospitalized.

Saturday marked the biggest protest to date against Sheinbaum’s administration, barely a year into her term. She spent the past week trying to downplay the demonstration, saying that right-wing operatives were behind the call to the streets.

The protest against Sheinbaum and her Morena party was originally spurred by young people copying other Gen Z movements like the one in Nepal, where the government was toppled.

An estimated 17,000 people marched on Mexico’s capital.

Authorities say they were mostly peaceful and that young people were a minority.

Hundreds of protesters were wearing hats in honor of Carlos Manzo, the outspoken mayor who was assassinated on Nov. 1 during a candlelit Day of the Dead celebration.

“Carlos Manzo didn’t die,” said Juan Jose Mendoza, sitting atop the horse he rode from a town on the outskirts of Mexico City. “This government killed him, Morena killed him.”
