REPORT: State’s new sex ed standards include lessons on gender identity, sexual orientation

FROM FOX NEWS: The Michigan State Board of Education approved new state sex education standards, which include recommendations that students be taught about gender identity and sexual orientation.

The “Michigan Health Education Standards Guidelines” were adopted on Thursday after a 6-2 vote, despite pushback from some parents and pastors, who argue they undermine parental rights and religious liberties.

Proponents of the standards, however, contend that they are age-appropriate and will help LGBTQ+ students understand themselves.

State education officials say parents still have the option to take their children out with no penalty. Language was also added to the new standards addressing what state law says about health and sex education, local control of schools and parent choice.

During the public comment portion of the meeting, people spoke out on both ides of the issue.
“Young people and Generation Z and the community that you serve are calling for comprehensive and inclusive sex ed and standards,” Brianna Bryant of Detroit said.

Macomb County resident Sheila Cahoon said, “We need to keep the gender ideology religion at home and let the parents teach that.”

In a post on X, Monica Yatooma, a citizen and mother who aims to be Michigan’s next Secretary of State, wrote (emphasis added), “Parents showed up—more than 100 parents, community members and concerned citizens signed up to speak at the Michigan State Board of Education meeting. Yet the Board voted 6-2 to approve new sex-ed standards anyway.

“These standards require teaching about gender identity and sexual orientation to students of all ages under the new Michigan Health Education Standards Guidelines—while our voices were dismissed.

“A scientist at the hearing even said: “Parents do not know best. Scientists know best.” — a remark that speaks volumes about how little respect the Board showed for families.

“It’s clear the process was never about listening to parents or respecting our concerns — the decision was made in spite of us. But that’s okay. We’re not going anywhere. We’ll keep fighting for our kids, because parents know best — not distant bureaucrats, not agenda-driven “experts,” and certainly not scientists who think they know our children better than we do.

“Parents never give up. Onward.”
